Does Embellishing Your Work With Paint Pens Make You Nervous?
Quick Tip Tuesday: Here’s a small trick that can make a big difference.

If adding marks with paint pens to your gel prints or other artworks makes you nervous, you’re not alone. It can feel intimidating to put a permanent mark on something you’ve worked hard on—but there are a couple of simple ways to make it easier.

My Quick Tips

πŸŽ₯ Watch the video below to see how I take the pressure off when adding marks with paint pens. I like to place a piece of acetate over my print and practice my marks there first before committing them to the actual print. It’s a great way to experiment without risk and get a feel for your strokes.

πŸ’‘ Bonus tip: Keep a baby wipe nearby as you’re working on your print. If you make a mistake while adding paint pen marks, you can wipe it off as long as it’s on top of dried paint—just avoid using it directly on bare paper.

These two tricks give you the confidence to experiment without worrying about ruining your print.

Have a Question?

I’d love to hear what’s challenging you in your gel printing practice. Send me your burning questions, and I’ll do my best to answer them in a future Quick Tip Tuesday post!

Take care and happy marking!

I’m Diana, the artist behind Crooked Little Studio. I teach playful ways to use random colors and materials to unlock creativity. You can find more inspiration here.

Meet Diana Garrison

I am a teaching artist who helps creative people like you explore techniques and develop practical skills so you can freely express your creativity and unlock your potential.

Until my retirement at the end of May 2024, I had been teaching K-12 students - for over 20 years - how to execute various art techniques and how to appreciate and talk about the visual arts; and I have been doing all this online for the past ten years. And now I am teaching online courses as well as adult workshops in my home studio, at local venues, and as a guest teacher in other locations.

The creative process is an amazing thing! As I explore my own art-making, I develop new styles and techniques along the way. I love to share that knowledge with others so they can benefit from what I've learned.

I offer tips, tricks, and insights in occasional newsletters for my email subscribers; I create free and paid resources and tools, and I am building a collection of online courses. I am always open to ideas for new things to share.

Won't you join me on this creative journey?

Cheers!
Diana
