The Colors of Mardi Gras: an Unexpected Combo
Hey everyone! In today’s Quick Tip Tuesday, I’m sharing a reel from back in August that uses a somewhat unlikely color combination—but it has a definite Mardi Gras vibe.
The main print in this video starts simply with a layer of hooker’s green (not hunter’s green, as I mistakenly noted in the caption).
For the second layer, I rolled out medium magenta and pressed plastic packaging material into the wet paint. The plastic lifted away most of the magenta where it touched, so when that layer printed over the green, it created a really rich purple with bits of green still showing through. You could get a similar effect using texture stamps as well.
The third layer is a pattern of metallic gold shapes—yum! Because the metallic is printed over darker colors, it really glows. You could absolutely stop right here and end up with a fantastic background or collage paper that feels very Mardi Gras.
For the final layer, I added white to the magenta because I wanted a lighter color to contrast with what was already down. That worked beautifully and still keeps the Mardi Gras feel.
All three colors used here are Liquitex Basics.

The other two prints from this color combo didn’t feel quite as Mardi Gras-y as the first one, but they still turned out really well. You never truly know how different layering orders will look until you try them—and that’s half the fun.
Do you have a favorite Mardi Gras go-to color combo? Let me know in the comments!

“Le Freak” by Chic was the obvious choice here—funky, bold, and just plain fun.
The majority of my color combos are selected completely at random by the color gods. 😉 This particular set of colors was suggested by one of my Instagram followers.
